Yes I know, angles can be intimidating and confusing. You have to learn strange math vocabulary, you have to measure, and draw, etc. These skills can be tricky to master for a new geometry learner! With a little bit of help, you will be naming and drawing angles like nobody's business! Try a few games of Alien Angles to help practice your recognizing angles and protractor skills!
This game addresses various aspects of the Geometry and Spatial Sense Grade 6 Curriculum Expectations. The following expectations can be found on page 92:
-identify, perform, and describe, through investigation using a variety of tools (e.g., grid paper, tissue paper, protractor, computer technology), rotations of 180º and clockwise and counterclockwise rotations of 90°, with the centre of rotation inside or outside the shape;
-create and analyze designs made by reflecting, translating, and/or rotating a shape, or shapes, by 90º or 180º
This game requires students to find the alien that is located somewhere on their radar. They are told what angle the alien is located at, they must then try to mimic that angle by rotating the bar at the bottom, and then they shoot the rocket hoping their angle is correct and reaches the alien! After they launch the rocket they are shown their angle on a protractor so they can see how accurate their estimate was. The game allows students to better understand how protractors work in a fun way! They are given the chance to practice their knowledge of angles and see how to rotate a shape in order to get to that angle.
